The Bearsville Retreat is found up a private drive in a charming compound comprised of the main house, a guest cottage, a writer's cabin, and a 40x20 saline pool. The setting is enviable, nestled in the rolling hills of Bearsville, on one of its most desirable roads. The compound is just two miles from Woodstock Village Green, and walkable to the Bearsville Theatre complex.

The houses are set in flat, park-like, landscaped grounds, surrounded by mature trees, heirloom flowering apple trees, and magnolias next to beautiful meadows, on a 1.9-acre lot, manageable and private.

The property has charm, charm, charm, built by the neighboring farmer's family set in their orchard, during the 1930s. The interiors have a woodsy feel with lots of little handcrafted details, not grand, but renovated in a relaxed lodge style, and now a little lux with the new bathrooms and kitchens.

The compound consists of a one-bedroom, one-bath, guest house, with skylights and the main house has two bedrooms, one king, and one queen. Both houses are sunny and comfortable with new skylights and new casement windows.

There is also an extra bedroom in the pool house/writer's cabin and an outdoor shower with hot and cold water. There is a garage, and also a fourth structure on the property that could be converted into a sauna or an additional guest space or art studio.

The property is also fully fenced for dogs to run off-leash.

The new bathrooms are a relaxing treat at the end of the day hiking with showers as well as deep soaking tubs. The woodsy open living room has a fireplace and plenty of seating (as well as central heating in both houses). A favorite room is the dining room, like an old-fashioned Captain's cabin, wood-lined, super cozy for the best dinner parties, a room for passing the port and telling tall tales.

There are lots of little nooks and seating spots around the house for private time, inside, as well as outside, with three bluestone patios, great spots for alfresco dining, reading, and relaxing. The sunroom leads out onto a protected patio with a dining table, and there are Adirondack chairs on the front patio for a view of Mount Tremper, with one more patio by the outdoor shower where you can watch the sunset.

The Guesthouse has a well-appointed, sun-filled open living room with a wall of windows. In the summer you can keep it wide open to live outdoors, in the winter it’s very cozy with the wood stove. There is a new kitchen, dishwasher and Microwave, and a spa-like bathroom with a lovely deep tub and a skylight, so you can relax while gazing at the stars. The sunny bedroom has a queen-size bed. There is also a spacious dining area, seating six.

Updates also include an entirely brand-new roof on the main house in 2021 and a brand new washer & dryer in the laundry room. The entrance is set back from the road, up a private drive, which is part of the property.
(as opposed to just egress).

This unique property is in one of the most charming settings next to Reynolds Farm which provides all the delicious countryside benefits, from where you can walk over in the morning and buy your happy eggs, to outdoorsy activities like swimming holes, hiking, tubing, skiing & trout fishing. Yet the property is close to everything you would need to have a relaxing time, with art galleries, Zagat-rated restaurants, cafes, wonderful local grocery stores, a cute little village for strolling and shopping, plus the relaxed atmosphere of a cosmopolitan environment in this historic arts community. Best of all it is walkable to cocktails at the Bearsville Cafe compound or you can just stay home and relax by the pool listening to the birdsong, like being on vacation every day.

The Retreat has been featured in Brownstoner, Upstater, and various other publications. Historically Bearsville attracts award-winning artists, renowned directors, dancers, photographers, designers, actors, writers, and rock stars, and The Bearsville Retreat has hosted our fair share!
